Ophthalmology Service

The Ophthalmology Service is one of the flagship services of the Specialty Department of the Bukavu Provincial General Reference Hospital. The latter makes its services available to the population of Bukavu through its activities, which focus mainly on consultations, examinations, drug management, prescription of medical glasses and eye surgery.

The Ophtalmology Service can manage and treat most eye diseases. For refractive surgery (myopia, astigmatism, hyperopia), preliminary consultations are made in the ward, and corrective treatment with glasses takes in the facilities of the Provincial General Reference Hospital in Bukavu.
The team is composed of four doctors, including two ophtalmology specialists and two training assistants, two nurses trained in ophtalmology (IFO) and a senior technician in ophtalmology (TSO). The rest of the package is packed by an administrative team. The Ophtalmology Department of the Bukavu Provincial General Reference Hospital waters the entire hospital and carries out inter-departmental consultations with all other departments especially for other ophtalmological examinations such as fundus and visual field.
Consultations take from Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 3:30 pm. Bukavu Provincial General Reference Hospital has a dynamic eyewear unit that can produce medical glasses for its patients within 48 hours of prescription.
Consultative examinations consist of eye tests to detect and correct refractive anomalies and exclude other eye diseases by examination with a biomicroscope (slit lamp) of the anterior segment of the eye (conjunctiva, cornea, iris, crystalline lens), examination of the fundus, systematic measurement of eye for patients over 40 years of age, examination of eye movements. When the situation requires it, further investigations are carried out. We also perform the Amsler test, retinophotography, Yag laser, colour vision, self-refractometry and retinal imaging.
Surgical procedures are another important part of the service’s activities. They may be performed on an outpatient or inpatient basis when family situation, geographical location or medical reasons require it. Cataract is the main indication for surgery.
